The Rogue and Barbarian!

Hello dragons!

For those new to Dragoon, sometimes dragons like to mix it up a bit and play human characters for a change of pace, and we wanted to encourage that. Enter the Rogue and Barbarian!

Increasing player count up to 6, as well as playing in any combination including 2 player Rogue vs Barbarian, these human characters pack a punch, introducing asymmetric play styles.

Combining them with Might and Magma is fully modular as well. Every character can draw from the Power Deck, enjoying the sweet exchange of one action for a certifiably awesome outcome. The volcanos and fault lines are also equally available to interact with for all characters. The outcome of stepping on (or being over run by) lava sends all players either back to their cave or off the map using the same rule sets for players hit by a Lay Waste. We worked hard to build on the rules of the base game for both expansions, minimizing the addition of new rules in order to get the fun machine up and running quickly.

If you’ve already played the Rogue and Barbarian, which one is your go to?

Post PAX East + Liquid Gold Map detail
about 4 years ago – Tue, Mar 03, 2020 at 11:09:57 PM

Hello dragons!

Our entire team busted our tails this past weekend at PAX East and we have been sleeping in our caves ever since. However, we played the most recent rule sets of Might and Magma with TONS of people and feedback was incredibly positive. There are some graphical tweaks that are likely happening, along with rule clarity updates, but this expansion feels so damn satisfying. Activating volcanos is...SO GOOD!

Now for the map! Nick Nazzaro has been hard at work "doing the hardened magma around the outer edge". As you all know, magma is the most difficult part. Obviously. However, we have some more to show you!

The detail Nick is building is mind boggling. Ross, the screen printing mastermind, is doing everything in his power to make this as special as possible. If everything goes as planned, we may have some physical prototypes before the campaign ends! Stay tuned.

Thank you all for the copious amount of support and kind words, both in the comments, at PAX, and on social media. Dragoon is our baby and to know how much you all love it means the world to us!

Hello dragons!

If you are at PAX East, come give Might and Magma a play! We were running demos yesterday and it was glorious. We also have Life Siphon!

(We have some sweet clear prototype volcanos)

Lay Waste co-owner Jon Ritter is also on some panels if you like hearing people talk about games and asking questions.

(Ask him weird questions)

Might and Magma Pin Set!
about 4 years ago – Tue, Feb 25, 2020 at 12:16:26 AM

Hello dragons!

You all have been absolutely destroying the campaign (in a good way!). We would like to take a moment to feature one of our favorite items, the Might and Magma pin set that Nick Nazzaro illustrated. You'll be able to add these gorgeous metal goodies post campaign via BackerKit.

They will each be 1.5" in size, gold metal, and hard enamel to ensure the detail really pops.

Question: If we were to make another pin, what would you want on it??

How to play Might and Magma
about 4 years ago – Thu, Feb 20, 2020 at 11:54:22 PM

Hello dragons!

Might and Magma is a modular expansion to Dragoon, so you can play it with the Rogue and Barbarian in any combination and any player count. This expansion adds 2 volcanoes and a power deck which we’ll explain in more detail in this update. You can also choose to play with just the volcanoes, just the power deck, or both!

The volcanoes bring the environment to life and give all players more choices in how to interact with the island. Each volcano is paired with a fault line, allowing you to activate volcanoes from a distance, or swap the location of the volcano with its fault line for more advantageous positioning for yourself.

After you activate a volcano, you’re sent back to your cave (if you’re a dragon), or off the map (if you’re the Rogue or Barbarian), to finish your turn. This can be exploited to your benefit as a teleportation mechanic, providing some significant added mobility. Active Volcanoes erupt after Tribute in a new phase called The Destruction Phase (so any claims can still pay out before getting covered in lava).

The volcanoes’ lava flow is predetermined by the face up lava flow card, providing open information for all players to plan for (as well as making lava flow placement quick and easy).

When lava is placed on population tiles, players, tunnels and claims are booted off, and that lava tile flips to a gold mine on top of that village or city. Lava tiles only last for one round before being removed, but gold mines stick around indefinitely—that is, until someone mines them.

Any player standing on a gold mine can mine it for 1 action, yielding 3 gold per action with no limit! At the end of that player’s turn, the gold mine is removed, re-revealing the city or village tile that was below. Pretty sweet deal!

Now the power deck is very straight forward, and very...powerful! Every player can draw from this deck and the rule is simple: at the start of your turn, if you don’t have a power card, draw one! If you do, don’t touch it!

Every power card costs 1 action to play and does something awesome, like teleport anywhere on the map (Rift), destroy any population tile (Lightning Bolt), claim any population tile (Presence), make the player in first lose 2 gold to the player in last (Balance).

The tough choice here is you’re incentivized to use that power card every turn to get a new one, but you have to maximize the value out of your 3 available actions. This simple addition adds a really nice layer of strategy and planning, with really fun outcomes. I mean come on, dropping a Lightning Bolt on your enemy’s city is just...ya gotta try it.

We looked at many other options for expansion content to include and ultimately, the volcanoes and power deck added the most gameplay with the least amount of added confusion or rehashing things that are already in the game.

We are pumped for you to enjoy this expansion.
